Christmas is exactly three weeks away and I still have no idea what I am going to bring to the table this year.
For the second year in a row, my family will have a potluck-style Christmas lunch.
That means each one brings at least one main dish and it’s shared with the masses as at the table.
It’s the most cost-effective way to host a lekker lunch with many options to choose from. Plus, seconds, thirds and barakatte are always guaranteed!
This also frees up the host from spending hours in the kitchen while everyone else is having a merry ol’ time. No one wants to be on kombuis duty on Christmas Day.
Three weeks may seem like a long time, but before you know it, it’s Christmas Eve and you find yourself skarreling for a forgotten blikkie caramel or condensed milk for your signature fridge tart.
Don’t get caught in that last-minute rush.
Puddings and cakes are usually an afterthought and really shouldn’t be, especially if you plan on adding some of the traditional favourites to your menu.
We all have an older relative who rocks up with the Christmas cake.
While it may not be a South African tradition, it has become part of our celebrations and one of the staples on the dessert menu.
Fruit cakes are a little tricky, though. It’s either too droog or the baker was a little too generous with the brandy.
It also needs a lot of time to prepare, so now would probably be a good time to start.
Another Christmas favourite that has grown on me is fruit mince pies.
It’s great to snack on while the table of meat is being set.
Depending on what you like, Christmas bakes can be a little pricey, but it’s the one time of the year we’re allowed to splurge!
