Q
Dear Auntie Pearl, I’m a 19-year-old girl and I’m stressing because my hair is falling out.
I brush and then there’s a whole lot coming out, I wash and there’s a whole lot coming out, I wake up in the morning and there’s a whole lot in my bed.
My mom is also now forever fighting with me because she says she has to clean up and vacuum up my hare all the time.
What can I do? And what is wrong with me?
From Candice K.
A Sjoe! Shame Auntie se kind, take a deep breath and calm down.
Now Candice, Auntie can understand why you are so upset, so let’s see what Auntie can do to help ease the pain.
Girly, did you know the average man on the street actually loses between 60 and 100 hairs a day!
This is completely natural.
Do you skeem you are losing more than daai, Candice?
There may be something else behind your hair loss.
So let’s find out why these reasons can be:
You could be over-styling, meisie!
Are you one of those girls who can’t go anywhere without her GHD and curling tongs?
Do you colour your hair all the colours of the rainbow?
Lots of colouring, straightening, teasing, styling and al daai dinge can really be bad for your hair, girl.
This can cause hair to actually break off.
So how do you fix it? Go natural, meisie!
It’s better for you, better for your hair, will save you time and money, you’ll be truer to yourself and it’s mos fashionable to boot!
Use a gentler shampoo, and check that it’s sulphate-free, that won’t dry out your hare.
And put those hot tools and intense hairstyles like high ponies and tight braids away for a while, en laat jou hare rus.
You could be having a problem on the inside.
Don’t skrik, but hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause sudden hair loss and even sometimes causes the hairs of your eyebrows to fall out!
You can get tested at the doctor for this, and once you treat the condition you will feel healthier and your hair will also grow back.
And then eat yourself back to beautiful hair, and health by chowing on nuts, avo, carrots, whole grain foods, citrus and spinach.
Are you stressed, Candice?
Stress can have strange effects on your body even causing hair loss.
Work stress, family stress, a break-up with a berk, stressing about money or a job, or the fact that you don’t have money or a job, or anything like that can cause stress, leading to hair loss.
If you skeem it’s stress, try dealing with it by exercising, getting a new hobby, or meditating.
If none of these things apply to you, it’s time you see a doctor or even a dermatologist.
It will be the right thing to do meisie because if it is something serious and health-related, you need to know what’s up so you can sort it out.
You’re only 19 years old and have your whole life ahead of you. Take care of yourself, body, mind and soul, Candice.
