Q
Dear Auntie Pearl, I am 14 years old and I am really so tired of my mother.
She keeps telling me I can’t date this guy just because he is 20 years old.
My mom says I must stay away from him, and that he shouldn’t be looking at a girl as young as me.
I don’t think she understands how cool he is and she’s always trying to be boring.
What can I tell my mom?
You are always giving good advice and I wish sometimes you were my ma.
Please help here, Auntie.
A
Child, Auntie knows you don’t want to hear it, but your ma is right.
Stop rolling your eyes, you are not as kwaai as you think you are.
And don’t skeem buttering up this old lady will get you in her good books – Auntie knows a faker when she sees one.
You are only 14 years old and if this grown-up man tries anything with you, it’s actually illegal and he can be thrown into jail!
You are a child and he’s an adult! Did you know this, meisie?
We all know the saying “ vroeg ryp, vroeg vrot”, and there’s truth in it.
You mos want to grow up to be a smart, successful, happy woman, not some loslappie who spent her time chising guys too old for her rather than doing well in school.
So what can you tell your mother? You can hou jou bek and listen to her!
She’s a wise woman and she’s looking out for you and trying not to let her daughter be another Cape Flats statistic.
