Q
Dear Auntie Pearl, I am writing to you all the way from Johannesburg.
I read your column while I was visiting family in Elsies River.
This was during the last school holidays.
In this time I also met a guy. I am 16 and he is 18. We had a great time the entire holiday.
Auntie, I am in Cape Town again this holiday, and planning to come again at the end of the year.
Do you think I should hook up with this boy again?
We had such a good time, and we even kissed. I have not been able to get him out of my mind for the past couple of months.
From Debbie.

Oooh jinne, nou kyk net hier. A Joburg girlie falling for a Cape Town boy.
Auntie mos always said nobody can resist our lekker outjies d own here.
Debbie, have you ever seen that classic movie, Grease? It’s the one with Olivia Newton John and John Travolta. It sounds almost like your situation – a proper school holiday romance.
Yoh, Auntie remembers the days when she was young and dreaming of vakansie liefde.
But let’s not go down my memory lane, let’s focus on you.
So it’s been a couple of months since you’ve last seen this boy – have you been in contact? There’s mos a hundred ways you kids connect these days.
It’s Facebook and WhatsApp and SnapChat and allerhande dinge that Auntie doesn’t even know of.
If you have been chatting, what has he been tuning you?
Does he ask you about your day, about how you are doing, what your life is like, and so on? Does he tell you he is excited to see you again?
Or has he been distant, not always answering your chats or questions?
Maybe he talks about his friends a lot, did he perhaps hint that there is a girl he likes?
Ai bokkie, there are so many questions, and I don’t think I can give you simple yes or no answer.
The best thing to do would be to talk to this outjie and then see if there’s still a spark between you.
How about asking him to meet you somewhere for a milkshake, or a movie.
Keep it very casual, and don’t have any expectations. It could be a good idea to even ask him to bring along some friends, so you can meet them.
Just see what he is like, and how he behaves towards you. Us girls can quickly tell if a guy is flirting with us.
If he smiles at you a lot, laughs at your jokes, and always tries to stand near you, then there are probably some feelings still there.
Have a good time over the holidays, and be safe – don’t rush him, and don’t let him pressure you into anything you don’t want either.
Good luck, hartjie.
