The story that really got readers rekking their bekke this week was the teacher sex scandal.
For a variety of reasons: It involved a young, attractive female water polo coach and male matric pupil(s); she happens to be the niece of former Springbok coach Nick Mallett; it took place at the elite Bishops Diocesan College in Rondebosch; and pictures and videos purported to be of the kaalgat teacher have been spreading like wildfire on social media.
Not to mention all the memes.
Apparently some of the videos - which the teacher is said to have shared with a schoolboy - are even trending on porn websites!
The teacher, Fiona Viotti, 30, resigned last week and is making sure she is well weggestiek.
Understandable.
Also, she reportedly wed recently and the scandal has ended her marriage.
There are no criminal charges against her yet - says her lawyer, top legal eagle William Booth - until the school concludes its internal investigation.
But if you thought the story was provocative, you should check out the reader reactions on social media.
Munier’s jaw dropped as he watched the blame game playing out in the comments section.
Especially fascinating was how the guys’ and girls’ opinions differ on the matter.
But more on that later.
What makes the case interesting is that there is no clear sexual offence.
Not rape or sexual assault - it doesn’t seem as if anyone was forced to take part in ougat acts.
Not statutory rape - the alleged victims are over 16 years old, which is the age of consent in South Africa.
Not grooming - the teens are not “children”, and likely have already been “educated” on sexual activity.
What Fiona could be found guilty of is “serious misconduct”. Not by a court of law, but by school management.
It’s definitely not what the parents pay over R250 000 per year in fees for.
If she hadn’t quit, she would very likely have been fired.
Look, if it is that she is guilty of preying on pupils, she's clearly got problems, needs treatment, and should be barred from teaching.
In the court of public opinion, however, the jury is split... along gender lines.
Most guys laughed off the story like it was harmless locker room talk; and jokingly envied the laaities for skieting‘n moerse geluk.
After all, it’s every pubescent schoolboy’s fantasy to score with a mooi juffrou.
Given the opportunity, they would probably have done the same.
Maybe they wouldn’t have shared those pics and let ma’m lose her job over it.
To them it's fair game, sleep with a teacher and you’re high-fived for being a hero.
But if you’re a schoolgirl, it’s a different story, you’re shamed as a slut.
It’s the old gender bias double standard, and this is why most women are disgusted by the scandal.
They feel that if the “perpetrator” were a male teacher, he wouldn’t be sexualised like Fiona and given porn star status.
And that’s why they want her locked up like a male rapist.
