I happened to be at the airport on Sunday evening when the Springboks arrived in Cape Town for the last victory parade, which took place through the streets of Cape Town on Monday.
It was such a beautiful sight to witness the relatively small crowd patiently waiting for the rugby world champs to emerge to the sounds of Hier Kom Die Bokke.
It was also a fitting finale to what was a tiring tour to show off the William Webb Ellis trophy to as many South Africans as possible.
Sadly, last week again saw attacks on both the Springboks and Captain Siya Kolisi’s wife, Rachel.
ATTACK: Last week we saw a victory and an attack in the Kolisi family. Picture: Supplied.
At some point, I will need to address that issue again, because it annoys me.
But right now, let me just say that the Springboks’ win was a much-needed boost of morale for a country going through some tough times.
We needed this as much now as we did in 1995, and the team’s growing diversity makes the win even sweeter by sticking it to their critics.
I keep wondering about those rugby-loving, Afrikaner racists with the big mouths when Siya was selected as captain.
They must be as conflicted as the local All Blacks supporters are.
