So far so good with the ongoing renovations project that I hope will result in my dream home.
My pedantic research is finally starting to pay off.
I have discovered numerous ways to save money.
One of the costs I was very frightened of is bricks. So I have spent a lot of time trying to find out what my options are.
I didn’t know that fairly ordinary clay bricks can cost as much as R5 each, which is a fortune considering that I would need as many as 20 000 of them for my top story.
So after asking around, I eventually found out that I could reduce my cost by using maxi bricks, which are bigger in size and have hollow channels in them, making them lighter.
Then I drove out to Paarl to a place called Claytile Bricks to go have a look.
I was shown something called second grade maxi bricks which are sort of rejects, because they were a bit damaged.
But they are just as strong as the first grade bricks, cost less than half the price and – because they’re bigger, I need fewer bricks.
So that was effort well spent and I have placed my order to begin the big build.
