Last week I wrote about the American tide that is very slowly turning against Donald Trump.
I mentioned that four institutions that are much loved amongst his supporters, have shown signs of dissent.
The American military, Fox News, Nascar and the NFL have all courted Trump’s anger by criticising him or showing overt support for the Black Lives Matter campaign, which Trump ignores.
Not so long ago, there were concerns that the American Supreme Court had so many conservative judges on its bench, it would almost always side with Trump, something which he has previously expressed on Twitter.
Turns out he was wrong.
Last week the court upheld a law that favours the children of undocumented immigrants, who are living and working in the USA.
And then in the same week, the court ruled that it is now illegal in America to fire someone from their jobs, simply because they are LGBTQ+.
The judgements caught even America’s democrats and left-leaning politicians off guard.
Trump used the news to lobby for votes in America’s November elections, saying he needs a second term in office to further transform the country’s Supreme Court.
“Do you get the impression that the Supreme Court doesn’t like me,” he Tweeted.
These are interesting times for Trump as the country’s courts are still sitting on a few key judgements on subjects that carry a lot of political currency.
The one is a decision on whether Trump’s financial records should be made public; another is a re-examination of American abortion rights; and lastly, several cases involving the separation of church and state.
While these are of course critical issues, I find it very peculiar that the so-called land of the free is still involved in legal wrangling about social issues that most other developed nations have addressed a long time ago.
In fact, there are many nations which Trump considers “sh**hole countries” that have very defined laws about these matters.
My guess is that if Trump does win a second term, his presidency will be the reason why the USA ends up as the leading sh**hole country.
