We are living in an era where our children are the targets of monsters.
More so than ever before, we as a society have left them to fend for themselves.
We claim to love and care for them, but we are not prepared to hold our leaders’ feet to the fire for them.
We adults are as clueless as they are helpless.
By not doing everything necessary to keep them safe, we are basically gambling with their lives on a daily basis.
Earlier this month, teachers and scholars in Khayelitsha protested in demand of safer schools, basically begging the adults responsible for their well being for security guards and metal detectors.
Just think about the desperation of that!
The children that we complain are too big for their boots, are having to act in an adult capacity, asking for a few basics that the adults are unable to provide.
HANDS OFF: Stop vandals
This is the society that we condone with our inaction.
Our unwillingness to force our leaders into action (or be removed), has given them the authority to do nothing.
While there’s a lot we can do to ensure the safety of our kids, it is the responsibility of our leaders to enact laws that will lead to a safe society around us.
But all they do is provide one excuse after another.
All of it reminds me of something that I say to my kids: if you really want to do something, then you will.
