Benni McCarthy is going to Wembley.
And it’s not for a soccer match.
In fact, it’s got nothing to do with soccer at all.
The Wembley the Bafana Bafana legend is talking about is none other than the Athlone diner.
Looks like Benni is ready for the type of binge that will make his four-goal frenzy in the 1998 Afcon match against Namibia look like the smallest of tasters.
Benni’s appetite for lekker dite and “ lugzaries” has been well documented.
It didn’t take any imagination or flair to come up with the nickname of Benni Boepwurm for the 2010 version of the Hanover Park ace.
His West Ham boss at the time wasn’t impressed.
CEO Karren Brady said: “McCarthy was the striker we sacked because he was overweight and never scored for us.
My view is that McCarthy should stick with his area of expertise which, according to many, is... eating.”
Eish, that’s to hard to swallow. Dis bietjie bitter, hoor.
She may have a point, though, with many Daily Voice fans writing in to complain about Benni’s punditry on SuperSport’s Euro 2016 coverage.
They say he shouldn’t be on TV.
Benni has a well- travelled accent. There’s some Portuguese and English notes, but it’s unmistakably Cape Flats.
Either way, Benni is always good for a laugh.
Welcome home big man. And don’t forget the Rennie, Benni.
