The ANC in the Western Cape has slammed Helen Zille for hosting a “drunken” matric ball afterparty at her Leeuwenhof residence last week.
ANC secretary Faiez Jacobs says the party became rowdy and when a female cop tried to shut it down, matrics apparently pelted her with bottles.
“Residents were up in arms about the shocking behaviour of learners, who refused to heed to requests from the premier’s neighbours to stop their thuggish behaviour. They pelted an officer who wanted to close down the party with bottles,” Jacobs said.
According to Jacobs, neighbours claim Zille had not informed them about the party.
“That Zille allowed this type of beha- viour - a late-night drunken binge - at Leeuwenhof, a supposed bastion of decorum, boggles the mind. According to residents she didn’t even have the decency to inform them of the party.”
The ANC is now demanding answers.
“Who gave permission for Leeuwenhof to be used for an afterparty? Can a matric class from a Cape Flats or township school also apply to use Leeuwenhof as an afterparty venue? How much alcohol was consumed? Was there adult supervision?” Jacobs asked.
But Zille says she had permission to host the party for her foster grandson, who attends Rondebosch Boys High.
“...and 15 days before the event I sent a letter to 80 families living around Leeuwenhof, advising them we’d host a party and requesting their forbearance. I got wonderful letters of support from the neighbours... (sic)”
She accused a neighbour of sending false information to the media.
She said there was no ‘thuggish’ behaviour and the music was off by 2am, although the permit said 3.30am.
