CAGED: Three robbers were caught in act trying to rob a man of cellphone in Ottery CAGED: Three robbers were caught in act trying to rob a man of cellphone in Ottery

Cape Flats residents can walk the streets a little easier after three notorious robbers were nabbed.

The knife-wielding skelms, who have embarked on a festive season robbing spree in Ottery, are behind bars after wakker cops caught them red-handed on Monday.

Grassy Park Police Station commander, Colonel Dawood Laing, says cops patrolling the area shortly after 2pm got a skrik when they saw a man run into traffic in an attempt to evade his attackers.

“Captain Ashley Petersen and his team were patrolling the Ottery industrial area as part of our festive season crime prevention plan,” explains Laing.

“The area is known for street robberies as the skelms prepare for their Christmas bonus, so at about 2pm, they drove down Ottery Road and this man just ran into traffic, being chased by three skollies.

“He took a gamble with his life, running into traffic, but it paid off as the police were in the right place at the right time.”

Laing says the cops jumped out of the van to assist the shaken 34-year-old Zimbabwean man and chased down the three skelms.

“The victim told the officers he was walking with his cellphone when the three suspects tried to rob him.

“They had a knife and he feared they would kill him, so he ran and that is when they were all spotted and the suspects arrested.”

Laing says while profiling the suspects, aged between 25 and 30, officers discovered that they are members of the Yuru Cats gang.

They were charged with attempted armed robbery and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

“They are all Katte [Yuru Cats] but they don’t have nine lives because their robbing spree has come to an end.

“The men are notorious for street robberies and now we are calling on anyone else who has been robbed in this vicinity to come forward and look through the books to see if they can identify the men.”

If you were robbed in this vicinity, call Captain Petersen on 079 894 1213.
