The boy was shot and killed and another person shot and injured while making their way to the footbridge that goes over the R300 highway to Wesbank on Friday afternoon.
The two were apparently robbed at gunpoint.
A community member said the robberies happened every day and even their Neighborhood Watch (NHW) could not control the number of incidents that occur.
Residents from Delft and Wesbank use the footbridge as a safe way to get across the R300, to find taxis to get to work.
But the footbridge, it seems, has become a danger as more and more people fall victim to the thieves and robbers on either side of the bridge, says the resident.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut confirms Friday afternoon’s incident.
“On Friday afternoon at 12.45pm an 18-year-old man was shot and killed on the R300 footbridge in Delft by an unknown suspect who is yet to be arrested,” he says.
“Another victim was shot and wounded during the same incident. The circumstances are being investigated.”
