The woman who stripped naked and trashed a Capitec branch in Strand this week has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

The unidentified woman was expected to appear in court on Friday, but National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says the matter was not placed on the court roll.

“The lady who entered Capitec Bank and caused havoc did not appear as she was admitted (on Thursday) to Lentegeur (Psychiatric) Hospital. We therefore did not place the case on the (court) roll,” says Ntabazalila.

The woman was arrested on a charge of malicious damage to property after she went bos in the bank, wrecking the computers, and causing chaos at neighbouring shops.

A video of the incident went viral on social media.

Woman has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

It was rumoured that the woman had become angry after she was refused a loan, however Capitec said she has never been declined for credit at the bank.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the bank said: “We have completed the investigation into a video taken in our Strand branch that has been circulating on social media.

“We can confirm that the woman in the video is a client of ours who had money in her account. She did not, however, have any declined transactions and has never been declined for credit by Capitec. Before entering our branch, she had been escorted out of a nearby establishment by security. Footage from the centre then shows her undressing before entering our branch.

“We ask that South Africans respect her dignity during this time. Capitec is deeply concerned about the woman and will not be making any further comment to protect her privacy and health. The local police, who have assisted her with similar instances in the past, are dealing with the matter in a dignified manner.“
