Police have arrested the boyfriend of a young woman who was found murdered in a home they had been housesitting for a friend.

The house in Blue Downs belongs to award-winning photographer Phando Jikelo, who works for the African News Agency (ANA).

Jikelo says the Delft couple had been looking after his home in Speyer Drive, Silversands, since Thursday, when he left to attend another friend’s wedding in KwaZulu-Natal.

Tired from his long trip, Jikelo said he arrived home on Wednesday morning to discover the 22-year-old woman’s murdered body had been found in his home the previous day.

He says he does not know how the woman was killed.

“They are friends from Delft and I asked them to look after my home while I was away for the wedding.

“I could not believe what happened when I got home after 2am and heard about the incident.

“She was already found on Tuesday afternoon, I believe.

“I do not have details, but this is a terrible thing to have happened. I know police are speaking to the boyfriend,” Jikelo said.

Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, confirmed earlier yesterday that a murder case has been opened for investigation and that the victim’s boyfriend had been taken in for questioning.

Last night, Van Wyk said the suspect has been arrested for the murder.

“A 20-year old male has been arrested for the murder and will appear in the Blue Down Magistrate’s court on Friday, 7 December 2018,” Van Wyk said.
