A Belhar woman says she was conned by a baker after she ordered a themed birthday cake for her son’s fifth birthday.
But instead of getting the kwaai Power Rangers design she was promised, the mom says the koek looked nothing like the one advertised, and on top of it, the baker had used old toys covered with icing.
Tamarin Julies, 30, says she was furious when she received her cake order from Bellville baker Charlotte Laubscher on Saturday.
“I posted on Facebook to ask if anyone knew of a reliable baker who could make a Power Rangers-themed cake and Charlotte responded to say she is able to make it,” says the mom.
“I even ordered extras because she said she can pull it off.”
Tamarin ordered the cake and extra biscuits, cupcakes, cake pops and rice crispy treats a month ago, which came to R800.
She paid R400 deposit and rest was going to be paid on the day of delivery.
Tamarin says Charlotte dropped off the cake on Saturday, but left immediately, before she could check the order.
The mom says her only child, who was so excited, was left in tears when he saw his “disfigured” birthday cake and treats.
The Power Ranger mannetjies were actually old action figurines covered with fondant, while the chocolate cake had a peanut butter filling, instead of the promised caramel filling.
Tamarin says she quickly replaced the ugly treats to make the cake table look presentable.
“So instead of having the actual themed table I just had odds and ends of savouries, sweets, chips, lamingtons, etc on the table,” she says.
The mother says she then did some research online and found other disappointed clients.
“I would never recommend her to anyone as I’m apparently not the first person she has been doing this to.
“I couldn’t believe what I saw on Facebook, there were more upset people.
“I decided not to pay her the rest of the money and asked for a refund.”
Tamarin says following several complaints, Laubscher eventually refunded her with R300.
Laubscher did not respond to phone calls and text messages from the Daily Voice and also blocked us on WhatsApp.
