Stellies hosts local icons at Endler Conservatorium

IF YOU are looking for a lekker chilled evening of cultured music then look no further, as the jazz division of Stellenbosch University’s music department will be featuring two South African jazz icons.

Capetonian composer and multi-instrumentalist Hilton Schilder and celebrated jazz guitarist Bheki Khoza will grace the stage this Saturday at Endler Conservatorium situated oppie hoek van Victoria and Neethling Street.

This concert will serve as a collaborative effort between these two iconic artists and Stellenbosch University (SU) Jazz Band and Ramon Alexander’s Maties Jazz Society.

Schilder’s music is arranged and conducted for the SU Jazz Band by Pascal Haas.

This concert promises to showcase the division’s strong commitment to honouring South African jazz.

The show will also feature vocals, violin, and flute, played by students of SU Conservatorium to build bridges between classical western music and jazz.

Join this celebration of Khoza’s and Schilder’s musical legacy that adds a new dimension to their signature sounds. Don’t miss this unique performance, where tradition meets innovation in a spectacular jazz experience.

It is all going down at the Grand Cafe so be sure to come early, grab a drink and let the laughter flow. The Grand Cafe also serves up baked treats and gourmet goodies.

KIDS DO SHAKESPEARE

The 15th annual Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa (SSFSA) takes place this weekend at the District Six Homecoming Centre and will run until 31 May, featuring 48 drama groups in dynamic, abridged renditions of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays.

As Africa’s largest youth drama festival, SSFSA has worked with over 15 000 learners and 1 000 teachers since 2009. This year welcomes School 1306 Moscow, a UNESCO-associated, International Baccalaureate school based in the south-west of the city.

The school is bringing a cast of nine Russian students directed by English actor Jonathan Salway and with original music by Andrey Borisov.

SSFSA fosters literacy, self-expression, and inclusivity, welcoming blind, deaf, and physically challenged performers. With translated scripts and training for teachers and learners, the festival remains a dynamic platform where diverse voices bring Shakespeare to life.

It’s Big Meg’s birthday shutdown this Saturday at Hanover Street in GrandWest with performances by Ricky vani Frontline, 21 Promo, Pengi featuring Alicious 101, Deecee, Bianca Klazen and many more. Entry is R130 at the door. The party starts at 9pm.
