Strand skelms in shooting with cops after robbing store

A SOMERSET Crossing winkel was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash by ten armed suspects resulting in a shootout between police and robbers.

Niklaas Thysen the public relations officer for the Strand Community Police Forum said that the retail store which was targeted is Boxer Superstore on Tuesday morning.

According to police, the store was invaded by ten armed men around 6.25am and a 28-year-old suspect was arrested as the rest managed to flee from the scene.

Thysen said that supermarkets in the community of Strand has become a regular target by criminals.

He explains: “The targeting of supermarkets in Strand are becoming a great concern and are well orchestrated during busy hours midday of the month or month end.

"We urge the shop owners to be more security alert when they are dealing with lot of cash deposits to and from banks or hold use some of cash in their stores.”

Warrant officer Joseph Swartbooi, a police spokesperson confirmed the case and said that Lwandle police are investigating a case of business robbery.

Swartbooi reports: “In response to your enquiry, kindly be advised that reports suggested approximately ten armed men entered a shopping complex in Somerset West the morning of Tuesday 6 May 2025 at about 6.25am.

"They took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the premises through the rear entrance. Upon exiting the building, they noticed a patrol vehicle approaching and fired numerous gunshots at the police members, who took action and detained a 28-year-old man.

"We can confirm that no one sustained any injuries owing to the exchange of gunfire. The rest of the suspects fled the scene and they are yet to be arrested."

When the Daily Voice reached out to Boxer Lwandle for comment, out calls were directed to the Boxer Head Office and after being put through to multiple people at the Boxer Head Office, Daily Voice was told to contact their media liaison.

The Daily Voice was told that the media liaison was not in office yesterday and the media liaison officer is the only person who can speak to the media. A contact number was provided but multiple attempts to call went unanswered.
