Several mense injured after taxi smashes into back of Golden Arrow bus in Athlone

A taxi driver had to be "cut free" following a moerse accident with a Golden Arrow bus near Athlone on Monday night.

According to reports, the driver told a local neighbourhood watch member that before the taxi collided into a bus he tried to brake and pulled the handbrake, however it was too late.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg says: “Athlone police registered a reckless and negligent driving case for investigation following an accident on 19 May 2025, at about 7pm on the corner of Jan Smuts Drive and Klipfontein Road, Athlone, involving a minibus taxi and a bus.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

“According to reports the minibus taxi collided into the back of the bus. The injured victims were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment.”

City of Cape Town traffic services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs told the Daily Voice that members of the traffic services, fire and rescue and police officials were on the scene.

Jacobs said that traffic services arrived on the scene at 6pm where a Toyota Quantum and Man Bus collided with each other and the taxi driver sustained injuries.

When neighbourhood watch members arrived at the scene they said that there were passengers lying oppie grond.

Meanwhile, due to the impact of the crash, the taxi was vasgedruk against the bus and that emergency services had to "cut" the driver out of the vehicle.

Local neighbourhood watch member Aqeelah Abrahams told the Daily Voice it appeared that those involved had no visual injuries, however, they could have sustained internal injuiries.

Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS) spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer said their bus driver did not sustain injuries.

Twigg added: “No arrests have been made yet.”
