THE taxi driver who was filmed stabbing a motorist with an Okapi in a viral video has been arrested on Monday morning and is facing charges of attempted murder.

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed the arrest and said the 28-year-old is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

Van Wyk reports, “Be advised that a 28-year-old suspect was arrested this morning (Monday, 2025-07-14) for charges of attempted murder following an incident on Thursday, 2025-06-26 at about 15:30 at the corner of Canon Road and Voortrekker Road, Maitland.

"The arrested suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Wednesday, for the mentioned charge.”

This comes after the driver, who is associated to the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA), broke his silence and said that the reason for the attack was because the 48-year-old motorist swore at him, calling him the "K-word" and wysing "Jou ma se p***” in a fit of road rage.

Footage of the violent attack at the intersection of Canon and Voortrekker Road in Maitland went viral last week and shows the taxi driver, who drives the Gugulethu-Maitland route, rukking the victim out of his vehicle before stabbing him with a Okapi.

Mandla Hermanus, chairperson of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) said that they, together with the primary association, said that this driver cannot drive any of their vehicles ever again.
