U-turn Homeless Ministries hope to raise R1M for brutal winter

U-turn Homeless Ministries are inviting Kaapse mense to trade their warm and cosy blankets for an outdoor night’s sleep this Saturday in hopes of raising R1 million in solidarity of the homeless.

As temperatures begin to drop and the winter chill sets in, U-turn Homeless Ministries is calling for empathy and action to help ease the plight of those experiencing homelessness in South Africa.

They have launched “A Night on the Streets”, a bold national campaign to raise R1 million in support of safe space accommodation linked to long-term solutions to homelessness.

A group of 30 courageous volunteers and supporters will brave the cold streets of Claremont Main Road this Saturday night in efforts to raise money towards getting people off the streets.

U-turn Chief Executive Officer Jean-Ray Knighton Fitt says: “A Night on the Streets is a chance for ordinary South Africans to do something extraordinary.

"By giving up the comfort of your bed for one night, you’ll be helping someone else take the first step toward lasting change.”

The organisation says that with over 30 000 people homeless in Cape Town and Johannesburg metros combined, U-turn’s goal is to engage hearts and minds, dismantle common misconceptions and remind South Africans that homelessness is seldom a choice.

Mense are invited to spend the night of Saturday, 17 May sleeping outside, on balconies, in gardens, on church grounds or school fields, to stand in solidarity with those living on the streets and raise money and awareness for this cause.
