AN 18-YEAR-OLD grade 10 pupil was gevang selling packets of dagga at a school in Delft.

Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed that the learner from Masibambisane High School in Delft was arrested.

Hammond says: “During a search by law enforcement, packets of dagga were confiscated. The school will begin disciplinary proceedings as per their code of conduct.”

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said that an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be proceeds of the crime were found in their possession on 16 May.

Delft Community Policing Forum (CPF) Chairperson Reginald Maart told the Daily Voice that the learner was caught with 27 sakkies of dagga and an amount of R80 cash.

Maart says: “She said she is selling the dagga to survive. The community is concerned and they think the school must strengthen their code of conduct and more parents need to be involved.”

“There is a working relationship with the school, the CPF and SAPS who regularly have programs and safety meetings with WCED Safeschools and Department of Social Development as safety partners. Also, schools apply for searches.”

Delft SAPS Social Crimes unit's Constable Mzukiseni Manyebese told the Daily Voice that the learner had told them that the supplier is someone who lives in the area, however did not tell them the volle waarheid.

Manyebese adds: “Our office in Delft are working with other stakeholders to have meetings where we discuss what is affecting the learners to provide them with awareness campaigns and did a search at the school.”
