Two more people have been shot resulting in one being killed on Wednesday night in Lavender Hill with the community is under siege as gang violence continues.
Residents say that on Wednesday night there was a helse geskietery between the Fast Guns and the Mongrels.
Steenberg police are investigating a case of murder after an alleged member of the Fast Guns was shot and killed in Chapel Road.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg reports: “Steenberg police responded to a complaint of a shooting in Chapel Road, Lavender Hill on Wednesday evening, 14 May 2025, at about 7pm and upon arrival on the scene they found the body of a 37-year-old man on the pavement who sustained gunshot wounds to his head.
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is believed to be gang related. The suspect/s are yet to be arrested. Steenberg detectives are investigating a murder case.”
Just 10 minutes later as shots continued to ring throughout the area, another person was shot and wounded in the arm in Dover Court.
Sergeant Twigg says that an attempted murder case has been registered for investigation.
He says: “The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Wednesday evening, 14 May 2025, at about 7.10pm, in Dover Court, Lavender Hill, where a 32 year old male was shot and wounded.
“Police members attended to the crime scene where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to his arm. The victim was taken to a medical facility for medical treatment.
“The motive for the attack is believed to be gang related. The suspect/s are yet to be arrested.”
Ward councillor Shanen Rossouw said that there are plans to deploy additional forces in the area.
Rossouw says: “The community is so tense, you don’t see anyone. If you do see people, it is one or two people.
"I know my ward, there is always a buzz in Lavender Hill. The community is in fear because they don’t know when the next bullets are going to come.”
Nicola Small from the Steenberg Community Police Forum said that there is fear and panic in the community.
She adds: “Wouldn’t you be scared to leave your home if you risked being caught in the crossfire? Some residents are too afraid to even step outside.
"I fear that this chaos and bloodshed continues longer than it should. I fear that an innocent bystander is going to get killed or harmed. I fear that the task is big and our resources are limited.
"But even when resources are scarce, hope is not. There are thousands of community members who care deeply and every voice, every action, every show of support makes a difference. So speak up. Together, we are not powerless.”
