GANG violence claimed another two lives after a shooting on an open field in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the Monday-night shooting and said Mitchells Plain police are investigating two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder and believes the incident is gang related.

Swartbooi reports: “Mitchells Plain police responded to a complaint on Monday 28 April 2025. Upon their arrival at the crime scene, on an open field near the corners of Strandloper Street and Cedar Avenue in Rocklands, they found the bodies of two males who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Both victims aged 24 and 34 were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.

"Two males aged 35 and 21 also sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The unknown suspects fled the scene in an undisclosed direction and are yet to be arrested. The motive for this attack is believed to be gang related.

"The circumstances surrounding this incident are now under investigation."

Linda Jones from the Community Policing Forum and resident in the community of Rocklands said Rocklands has turned into a war zone.

Jones warns: “People are called upon not to walk around in the area of Strandloper and its adjacent roads, which is very troublesome.

"We therefore call on all relevant government departments to take this more seriously. We don't even see any of the ministers in our area.

"These killings are happening too often now. I have been living in Rocklands for the past 45 years and it was never like this so it is very alarming.

"I want to ask our ward councillor to make sure that these open spaces and dunes are getting their urgent attention. Just imagine the trauma inflicted on those residents who live in the road.”
