Skelms have stolen the fencing from a public park to use as braai wood.
This week, ward councillor Charles Esau discovered the park he had asked a community member to safeguard has been vandalised by thieves who apparently used the wood of the fence to make a fire.
The park is located in Maitland Street, Bishop Lavis, and is often used by children who play soccer there.
Esau says two months ago, a community member was appointed to safeguard the park but that the contract ended.
“I was very disappointed when I came there on Monday to find the fencing had been chopped off,” he says.
“This is what you call vandalism. This was my observation while carrying out a site inspection in the area.
“We renewed the look of this park two years ago and even placed wooden fencing around it so the structures were not old.
“We suspect now that these persons chopped off the wood to use it for a fire or braai.
“I am disappointed because a contractor was hired two months ago to safeguard the park but that contract ended.
“I was going to ask for a new contractor to be appointed.
“Now this happens and this is a place where children play soccer daily.”
The City of Cape Town did not respond to queries Tuesday.
On Monday, a council rent office in Manenberg was stripped by skelms and drug addicts, who carried away door frames, windows, doors, toilets and even the metal sheets of the roof.
