Commuters travelling in a Golden Arrow Bus to Mitchells Plain on Thursday afternoon got the skrik of their lives after they were robbed on the bus.
Passengers aboard the 12.30pm Merrydale bus which went via Hanover Park from Cape Town was ambushed by two armed men who pretended to be commuters.
According to one passenger, the brazen diewe sat at the back of the bus, and as they got onto Eisleben Road, the skelms started robbing people at gunpoint.
The commuter says they threatened the driver and took his fares.
They then “casually” got off the bus and ran off.
The commuter says she has now lost all faith in the public transport system.
“I take the bus because I thought it’s safe. What else must we do? Commuters are in danger.
“As the bus was driving these two African men were chatting as normal.
“It was like they were watching everyone because they knew exactly where to go to take our phones,” she says.
“I sat praying. I tried not looking at them. I was in tears as they were rukking things. I thought I was going to die.”
Golden Arrow’s spokesperson, Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, confirmed the robbery and says the bus driver was robbed of fares while commuters’ cellphones and personal effects were taken.
“No one was injured. Our drivers do have access to a company social worker as well as external trauma counselling,” Dyke-Beyer said.
In June, four people got onto a bus in Grassy Park and robbed a security guard of his belongings while allegedly looking for members of a rival gang.
