DELFT motorists have been warned to watch out for laaities stealing off the back of moving bakkies.
In a shocking viral video, a group of young boys were spotted jumping onto the back of a bakkie at Silversands Circle, Delft Main Road and escaping at Voorbrug Stop near the Post Office after stealing items from the bakkie which has a canopy on.
A video was posted by a community group on Facebook and captures the act showing the group of youngsters standing at the circle when two boys can be seen running towards the bakkie and hanging on to the back.
The children are then seen opening the canopy while the bakkie is driving. One laaitie later jumps off the bakkie with a parcel in hand and starts running away while the other one jumps off moments later.
The driver seems min te wete as he does not stop.
However, mense in the comments said that this is nothing new as it is a daily occurrence.
The video is dated Monday, 14 April, and appears to have happened at 1pm – during school hours.
One comment read: “They do it every single day. Where are their parents?”
Another comment added: “I see this every day. If this has to happen to me, we will have a good day together. I will m**r him whole day. His mother won’t find him.
“The other day toe gryp een a box vleis out of a bakkie and a woman came along and druk geld in sy hand and off she go with the box, ons mense ja.” (sic)
Francois de Bruin, the public relations officer for the Delft Community Policing Forum, said they are aware of these laaities and are working on a way to capture them.
De Bruin reports: “We are [aware] of this for quite some time now and we are busy working towards a strategy to apprehend these young kids and to bring them in or hold the parents accountable because why are they not attending school.
“Also, we want to make motorists using the road and area in question more vigilant and secure their valuables, try not to have even equipment at the back – especially in open bakkies – which is what these young boys prey on.
“As these youngsters are only pawns being used by seasoned gangsters doing their bidding, SAPS, Law enforcement, Neighbourhood Watches and CPF are doing what we can.”
Another video shows a foreign national who is already wys of these skelms.
He decided to weld steel spikes on the back of his bakkie’s bumper to keep the sticky fingers away.
