Help keep Cape Town warm

Marsha Dean|Published

With the cold winter days upon days us, non-profit organisation Bakuphe (generous in IsiXhosa) situated in Belhar is hosting their annual winter blanket drive to help keep Cape Town warm.

Established by Christoffel Maneville in 2019, the initiative aims to lend a helping hand by giving a blanket to those living on the streets and those who lost their homes during fires or the winter storms.

Christoffel explains: “We do not get any funding so we try our best to ask for help. Since 2019, when I started the Blanket Drive by asking residents and friends and also via social media platforms to support the initiative, it just flourished and now it's an annual winter project under Bakuphe NPO where I am the Founder of the organisation."

Christoffel said that they distribute blankets all over Cape Town to those who don’t have an income and are living on the streets.

He adds: "I always say that it could have been me living on the streets because not everyone is privileged. Those of us who say we are comfortable also get cold at night, so imagine those who do not have a decent shelter how they are surviving but a blanket can keep them warm during winter.”

Donated blankets will be distributed on 14 June to residents living in an informal settlement in Kuils River and anyone in need.

If you can help with a new or pre-loved kombers that is still in a good condition can drop it off at Shammah Community Church, 20 Organ Street Belhar or for more information on how to get involved, contact Christoffel Maneville on 069 519 0922.
