Cape Town’s most glamorous ouma passed away at the age of 103 years on Sunday night.
Ma Agnes Bezuidenhout was well known for knowing how to put an outfit together and was featured in a number of publications.
She passed away peacefully at 10.50pm on Sunday night in her home next to her daughter Mercia Bezuidenhout, 68.
Mercia tells the Daily Voice: “I just turned my head to take the lavender oil to rub her head and I moved her hand out of the way but she didn’t moan with pain. My mom was lying next to me and I did not even hear a sound. I phoned the neighbour and she confirmed.
I usually go in a frantic state but God prepared me so beautifully for this moment that I could tell her ‘Mommy, it’s OK, you don’t have to worry about me, go to daddy, it is Fathers Day.
"She chose such a wonderful day from Fathers Day into Youth Day because she was just that lady who displayed an effervescent youth on the dance floor and everywhere, she was the epitome of youth.
"Musicians in Cape Town knew my mother because when I started taking her to events my mother was on the dance floor and people loved her.”
Mercia said that the funeral will take place next Saturday and the funeral parlor will be doing the funeral for free. She added that Ma Agnes will say her last goodbyes in style of course as she will be driving in the funeral parlor's brand new Mercedes-Benz.
Mercia added that her mother was a style icon even if she was just in the house.
“She was totally of style. One day paramedics came to fetch her and she said that before she leaves she needs to put on her pearl earrings and necklace. She always said that she needs to look nice when she leaves the house.
"Even when she was bedridden and we had visitors coming, she would always want her done and wear some Clinique perfume.”
Ma Agnes leaves behind four children as her second eldest son Gerald Bezuidenhout passed away at the age of 81 years from cancer on 22 March.
Her son and daughter aged 68 and 82 still live in Cape Town while she has a son in Australia who is 78 and a 74-year-old daughter living in Canada.
Her famous phrases include “on top of the world, like a rose on the bush” and “as sure as the Lord made little green apples”.
According to Ma Agnes, the secret to her long life were five things: “Live one day at a time. Thank God every day. Live life to the full. Live healthy, and live happy”.
