MENSE in Bellville South are urged to exercise caution following alarming reports of sweets allegedly containing tik circulating on the streets.
The warning comes after two people were hospitalised after consuming these lekkers which were received from an unknown source.
The sweets are similar to hardened jelly the size of an ice cube and come in various colours.
According to Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, an enquiry has been registered following the hospitalisation of the victims.
Swartbooi reported: “Bellville South police bears knowledge of the details cited in your enquiry. According to reports, two individuals were hospitalised after they ate sweets which they received from an unknown source.
“The victims, however, did not register any criminal cases for further investigation. Bellville South police, however, registered an enquiry.”
The Bellville South Community Policing Forum has taken to Facebook to alert the public, advising people to be vigilant about accepting any food items from strangers.
The post said: “The Eerste River Day Hospital confirmed that two patients were admitted to the hospital with medical conditions after eating the Jelly-type sweets.
“After tests it was confirmed that the sweets contain elements of tik, dagga and other unknown chemicals.”
When the Daily Voice reached out to Monique Johnstone, a spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health, about the individuals who were admitted, she cautioned about the speculative nature of these reports.
She said: “These are allegations. We cannot divulge patients’ information. We will need dates when these patients were admitted, names, gender, and age, please, before approaching our staff for confirmation and if test results were done to confirm that it was substance-related.”
The police have asked anyone with information regarding these incidents or the source of these dangerous sweets to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
