STEENBERG police are investigating a murder case after the discovery of a body burned beyond recognition of an unidentified male was found inside a wheelie bin on Sunday night.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident and said that the horrific discovery of the body in Joe Marks Boulevard, close to the canal, was made by a passerby who informed the police.

Twigg reports: “Steenberg police registered a murder case for investigation after the burnt body of an unidentified male was found in wheelie bin in Joe Marks Boulevard on Sunday night, 2 March 2025.”

“According to the report the discovery was made by a passer-by and notified the police. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made yet.”

Nicola Small, chairperson of the Steenberg Community Police Forum said that this is a disturbing incident, but she does not have much information on what led to the body being burned.

She adds: “Authorities were alerted to a fire and responded. The incident is under investigation, and I have no further details at this time.”

“This is a disturbing incident that has left our community in shock. The SAPS are investigating and urge anyone with information to come forward. It’s incredibly troubling to think someone could do something like this.”

A video was posted online by a crime group showing the graphic image of the burnt body who seems to be in a crouching position. The body is pik swart gebrand as the person is seen laying on his back while smoke is leaving his body.

The male’s face is burned beyond recognition and is not not possible to make out what the person was wearing as every article of clothing was charred.

Resident Mardia Hendricks commented, saying: “Sad. Who is this person? The cruelness of monsters these days seems to have no limits.”

Local Claxton Pascoe said: “This is the daily reality out there. Let’s educate ourselves about our surroundings.”

Sergeant Twigg is urging anyone with any information about this incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
