BONTAS TAKE BACK THEIR STREETS

The community of Bonteheuwel are claiming back their streets after seven people were shot and one killed at the weekend in gang-related shootings.

Gunshots rang out throughout the community of Bonteheuwel on Friday, with cops opening a case of murder and two of attempted murder.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said: “Bishop Lavis police registered two counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident on Friday night, 23 May 2025, in Teak Road, Bonteheuwel, at about 11.40pm in which two males aged 37 and 42 were shot and wounded.

"Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. Both victims were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. The motive for the shooting is believed to be gang-related. The suspect/s are yet to be arrested.

"In another shooting incident on Saturday morning, 24 May 2025 at about 01:55, police members responded in Teak Road, Bonteheuwel, where they found an adult male with a gunshot wound to his head.

"The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for this shooting incident is also believed to be gang-related. A murder case was registered for investigation."

Councillor Angus Mckenzie, together with all the neighbourhood watches and the Community in Blue, took to the streets to create visibility to help keep their community safe.

Councillor Angus said: “All in all, seven people were shot in Bonteheuwel on Friday night, six of those seven people were gang-related shootings where all of them survived.

"The seventh person that was shot was an unrelated incident where a gang member walked into the house of someone and opened fire on that person and walked out of the front door.

"Ever since the shootings on Friday evening there have been no gunshots in Bonteheuwel. Our teams have been operational Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning again and will continue for the rest of the week but there have been no other shootings since.”
