Second arrest made in Alnika Mitchell murder

A second suspect has been arrested in the murder case of teen Alnika Mitchell from Factreton who was gunned down on 6 December 2025 in front of her yard.

The 14-year-old meisie was shot in a crossfire on Saturday, 6 December 2025 while watching learners celebrate their matric farewells in the area when she was hit by a stray bullet. She ran inside her yard, where she collapsed and died.

Just two days after her passing, on Monday, 8 December 2025 at about 1.30pm, Kensington SAPS conducted an intelligence driven operation in a squatter camp, in Royal Road, Maitland where they arrested a 35 year old man named Milosh Basson.

Basson made his second court appearance at the Cape Town Magistrates Court on 18 December 2025 where he faces six charges of murder, four counts of attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm.

The case has been postponed to 9 April 2026 for further investigation.

Police have made another breakthrough in the investigation and arrested a 23-year-old suspect on Thursday who will make his first appearance on Monday at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirms, “Kindly be advised that a 23 year old suspect was arrested on Thursday, 18 December 2025, on charges of murder and attempted murder. He will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Monday.”

Ward councillor Cheslyn Steenberg has welcomed the arrest and calls upon residents to speak up and not protect criminals.

He added: “I am pleased that a second suspect has been arrested. I wish to convey my appreciation to the investigating team for their diligence. Furthermore, I will be monitoring this case closely to monitor each move made in this case as we seek justice for our daughter, Alnika.

"What infuriates me more is the fact that residents still harbour these criminals and their guns in our very community - almost forgetting that the guns and ammunition they are hiding could also kill them or their loved ones.

"I therefore urge the community of Kensington, Factreton and Maitland to no longer protect these gangs and their weapons - let our community be a safe place for us all to live in, work and play. We should all strive to avoid another tragedy like this, now, actively playing our part."
