DELFT MENSE TO COMBAT GANGS

Community leaders to tackle gun violence

A GANG turf war has Delft community leaders scrambling for a plan to combat the gun violence after a man was shot and killed by an assailant on a bicycle on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting incident took place in Umfuli Street, Leiden around 12.50pm when the victim was gunned down by a suspect riding by on a bike.

The victim was declared deceased on the scene.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a murder case is under investigation.

Twigg reported: “Delft police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident on Tuesday afternoon, 18 November 2025, at about 12.50pm, in Umfuli Street, Leiden, where an adult male was shot and fatally wounded.

“Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting, upon arrival on the scene they found the victim with gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

“According to reports the victim was approached by a male on a bicycle who shot him before fleeing the scene. The motive for the attack is yet to be established.”

This comes after three men were shot and killed in a mass shooting in Sandrivier Street, Leiden on 9 November in what is believed to be a gang related shooting around 5.30am.

Ward councillor Dineo Masiu said that the reason for the continuous gun violence is due to an ongoing gang fight about turf.

She explained: “There is a lot of gang violence about turf happening in the area especially in Leiden, Voorbrug and Roosendal. We want to curb it before it gets out of hand.

“I had a meeting with the Director of Law Enforcement so that we can come up with a plan and that is our focus right now. “We will make sure the gun violence does not escalate further.”
