TWO suspected robbers are vas after they crashed their getaway car following a shootout with Metro Police.

After receiving a tip-off about a suspected robbery in progress in Philippi East on Wednesday morning, officers sprang into action.

When cops spotted the suspects in Sheffield Road, they gave chase and jaaged the skelms through the streets.

The skelms opened fire and officers shot back, causing them to close control of their Hyundai i10 and get caught in a fence.

Cape Town Metro Police spokesperson Superintendent Ruth Solomons added: “The four suspects who got out of the vehicle fired at officers again, before two ran away.”

“Two suspects, aged 28 and 30, were arrested. Police recovered a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off, along with three cellphones believed to have been stolen during the robbery.

“Both men were taken to the Philippi East Police Station and face charges of possession of a firearm, false number plates, reckless driving, resisting arrest, pointing of a firearm and assault on police officials.”

The arrests come nearly a week after a high-visibility patrol in the same area, where Safety and Security head JP Smith joined Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (LEAP) and SWAT members for a joint operation targeting crime hotspots in Philippi and Nyanga.

LEAP regional inspector Demingo said the operation focused on driver checks along Govan Mbeki and Sheffield roads.

He says: “We also found that if we issue a fine they do not have any identification documents with them making it difficult to write up a fine."
