A RASTAFARIAN family from Delft are dik die hel in after cops allegedly raided their home, pepper-sprayed their klein baba, shot their dogs dead and then stole R10 000 from them.
In a sitdown interview with the Daily Voice, the family said that their home was omgedop when cops arrived without a search warrant looking for drugs on Monday.
Caroline Kampher, 38, explained: “My husband asked them waar is hulle search warrant, but they did not have one. That is when my husband said he is not going to open the gate, but they broke it down.
“Then the one cop took his pepper spray out and while I had the baby on my hip, he sprayed me and the baby, who is a year and four months old. So when my husband intervened, they sprayed him as well.
“We tried keep the gate up, toe klap hulle ons and then we started throwing them with cold water. They even fired a shot into the wall of our house before they came inside the yard.”
The family were met with approximately “16 vans” and “30 cops” who were called as backup.
The mom added: “That is when they got hold of my husband outside. Our neighbours saw how they klapped him flou and stomped on his feet. They hit him so hard that his false teeth fell out of his mouth.
“One of the officers then walked over to my daughter Chelsea (19) and he kicked her so hard that she fell over backwards – he beat her like she was a man.
“And then they klapped me like I was ’n kind. They hit me so hard that I also fell over one of the couches, before they moved on to attacking our son and slapped him as well.
“A female officer broke three glasses over my [15-year-old] son Govanni’s, head. I tried stopping them, but they pinned me down on the couch and started beating me again – so hard that that they even struck my daughter’s baby over the head.”
The family further claimed that the cops trashed their home, stole R10 000 cash and broke their cellphones when they saw them filming the raid. Their two dogs were allegedly also shot dead by the cops.
The Kamphers and a fifth family member, Lejhaar, were arrested and this led the Rasta community to the Delft cop shop where they burnt tyres.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the protest and said that the five were arrested for dealing in dagga.
Van Wyk reported: “According to reports, the Rasta community was unhappy with this and protested in front of the main gate of the police station. The community started to burn tyres.”
When the Kamphers were taken to the holding cells at court on Tuesday they were told that there was no case against them.
Of the allegations made by the family, Van Wyk said: “Allegations of misbehaviour and or the lack of service delivery – which is contrary to normal police conduct as enshrined in our Code of Conduct – is regarded as serious misconduct.
“We therefore appeal to the family to lodge a formal complaint with Delft police management or Ipid...”
