A MITCHELLS Plain family got the shock of their lives when they went to recover their stolen car, but were greeted by a crime scene instead after the man in possession of the Fiat Uno was shot and killed.
A 20-year-old man was murdered on Sunday morning at the corner of Stock Road and Govan Mbeki Drive near the BP Garage in Philippi East while working on the green karretjie.
The bonnet of the car was open and the man was apparently checking the engine when he was shot in the face and declared dead on the scene.
It turned out that the car was stolen the day before at Liberty Promenade Mall in Mitchells Plain.
The owner of the vehicle, Avril Idas of Tafelsig, said she and her family parked the car at the food court on Saturday evening and when they came out the vehicle was stolen.
Idas explained in an interview with the Daily Voice: “We were coming from my granddaughter’s graduation around 6.20pm and went to Pick n Pay to buy a few things, not even 30 minutes later when we came out the car was gone.
“The car was stolen in the parking lot.We watched the CCTV footage and saw two guys get in the car as if the car belonged to them and took off.
“We locked the car, my son-in-law even went around the car to make sure the car is locked but they are ou skelms.”
Idas said she roped in the help of Sniper from Spot on Crime and Emergency, who managed to track down the vehicle to Philippi East.
An impressed Idas added: “Sniper was kwaai, hy was op die ball. He notified us on Sunday that he tracked the car in Philippi East and that we should go immediately otherwise they are going to strip the car. We notified the detective and our neighbour took us with police escorting us.
“When we got there, it was a tragedy, there was blood on the tire and his body was still lying there, another person was also wounded.
“Our car does have a problem, before we drive, we need to first do something by the bonnet so I believe that he got out and checked the bonnet and that was when he got shot because of worldly things. We are glad we got the car back but we are going to sell it. We feel so bad because he has a family and that is someone’s son.”
