SKELMS came up empty-handed in a botched cash-in-transit heist near Borchers Quarry Road on Monday night.
Despite authorities giving min details about the investigation, mense shared footage of the stationary cash-in-transit truck with a burning Volkswagen Polo behind it.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said that the case is subject to an investigation by the The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (known as the Hawks).
Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Siya Vukubi said that they are investigating a cash-in-transit heist that occurred on Monday 29 September at approximately 20:00 near Borchers Quarry Road in the Airport vicinity.
Vukubi reports: “It is alleged that security guards were accosted by a number of suspicious vehicles that blocked the cash vehicle to a standstill.
“A number of shots were fired, but no injuries were reported as a result of the shooting.”
He added that the suspects fled the scene empty handed and are yet to be arrested.
Meawhile, activist group Fight Against Crime SA (FACSA) said: "We are deeply concerned that Cape Town is now seeing cash-in-transit heists, a plague that took hold in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal when the state failed to get a grip.
"Add this to gang wars, taxi violence, and extortion, and it’s clear criminals have no ceiling.
"With SAPS specialised units crippled by low capacity and corruption scandals shaking the service, what’s government’s answer, or do we just accept open-season lawlessness as the new normal?
