A YOUNG man from Delft was tragically killed a week before his wedding day after he attempted to sell his phone, but was ambushed and shot dead in Ottery on Wednesday evening.

Abduragman Jacobs told the Daily Voice that his nephew Mogamat Yusuf Daniels, 29, found a buyer for his iPhone on Facebook Marketplace and arranged to meet at a garage in Ottery on 24 September.

However, things took a turn for the worse after they told him to meet at a winkel "at around 9pm".

Jacobs explained: “He was going to get married on the 4th of October and he thought if he sold his iPhone he could buy things that he needed for his wedding, because he wanted to be responsible and independent.

“Then two girls contacted him and showed interest saying that their father is going to buy the phone for them. They set up a meeting and Mogamat Yusuf and his fiancé were together, but he dropped her off before going to meet them.

“Then he picked up his cousin and the cousin’s son to go with him, but the girls told him to meet at a shop cause they had to get something instead of meeting at the Engen garage in Ottery Road.

“When they met with him they asked him to open up the phone to see if it is a legit phone and to synchronise it. Then they realised that this was not girls coming to buy the phone and that it was a robbery.”

At that moment a gunman appeared and told them to give all their belongings and held his cousin’s son at gunpoint.

Jacobs added: “The gunman shot Mogamat Yusuf, but he shot back at him with his legal firearm.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg reported that police are investigating a murder and attempted murder cases after cops responded to a complaint of the shooting incident.

Twigg said: “Upon arrival on the scene they found the body of a 29-year-old male who sustained fatal gunshot wounds. A male aged 18 sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and a 45-year-old male escaped unharmed.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.”

The deceased was his mother’s only son and was described as a jovial, everyday the same person who was always concerned of other people and put their needs before his.

His uncle added that he planned to have their wedding on his fiancé’s birthday.

Jacobs added: “He invited everybody to his wedding, but what he didn’t know was that he invited all of them to his janazah and that is the sad part.

“All his mother could talk about while driving to the mortuary was her son and his fiancé is so devastated and speechless, because 30 minutes before she sat next to him he was killed.”

Twigg added that two females aged 23 and 18 were arrested and a 34-year-old male is under police guard in hospital.
