CAPE Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) bosses are fearing for their lives after another murder rocked the minibus industry yesterday.
Former Cata public relations officer Andile Seyamo, 61, was gunned down yesterday morning, with the Western Cape Government set to enforce a 30-day shutdown of routes between Somerset West and Khayelitsha as a result of a deadly dispute between Cata and rival association Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) from Wednesday.
Seyamo was shot outside his home in Browns Farm, while pulling out his car.
Last Wednesday, deputy chairperson Mnikeli Mgope, 61, was also shot and killed while sitting inside his white Toyota Fortuner at the Nyanga taxi rank.
Cata spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi said that they are concerned for their safety.
Sityebi explained: “I do not know what is the exact circumstances surrounding this incident at the moment but we received a message informing us that Seyamo was gunned down this morning while pulling out of his driveway at his house.
“Our biggest concern as a Cata leadership currently is our administrators are being gunned down.
“Since early this year our administration members have been gunned down and it is concerning.
“I am fearing for my life as well because I can see what is happening close to me.”
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed that Nyanga police are investigating a case of murder.
Swartbooi said: “Detectives are hard at work gathering information at the crime scene in Dlephu Street, Browns Farm for clues to where a 61-year-old man was shot and killed earlier today, Tuesday 16 September 2025.
"Information at our disposal suggests that unknown gunmen opened fire at the deceased and fled the scene.
"The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The motive for this attack is believed to be taxi related. Nyanga police registered a murder for further investigation.”
