TRAFFIC on Baden Powell Drive came to a standstill yesterday as gatvol residents of Khayelitsha staged a protest.
According to cops, dozens of mense took to the busy roadway and threw stones.
The public violence between Walter Sisuslu Drive and the N2 Highway forced City of Cape Town Traffic to direct affected road user to alternative routes and send out an alert.
Spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Traffic, Kevin Jacobs confirmed that the City’s traffic officers were deployed into the area as well.
Jacobs explained: “Cape Town Traffic Officers are attending incidents of public violence in the Khayelitsha area. Baden Powell Drive is closed between the N2 and Walter Sisulu Road. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.”
At 10.25am, the City reported that Baden Powell Drive had been reopened.
The police deployed Public Order Police to stabilise the situation.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said that the road had to be closed in both directions.Twigg reports, “Kindly be advised that Public Order Police have been deployed to monitor and stabilize a service delivery protest this morning, 9 September 2025, on Baden Powell Drive between the Walter Sisulu Drive and the N2 Highway.
“According to reports approximately 80 community members are staging the protest and throwing stones. The road has been closed in both directions.
“SAPS deployment will stay in the affected area until the situation has normalised.”
