THE community of Penhill Estate in Eerste River is reeling in shock after a 75-year-old ouma was allegedly murdered by a ‘possessed family member' during the early hours on Friday morning.
According to a neighbour, it is alleged that the woman was hit in the face with a car jack.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that a 38-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection to the murder.
Van Wyk reported: “Kleinvlei police registered a murder case following an incident in the early hours of Friday morning at De Hulk Road Penhill, where the body of a 75-year-old woman was found.
“No sign of forced entry was found at the scene. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.
“The motive forms part of continued investigation and a 38-year-old suspect was arrested”
When the Daily Voice arrived in De Hulk Road on Sunday in the quiet Penhill Estate neighbourhood, residents directed us to the house where the gruesome incident took place.
When we arrived at the house, nobody was home. A neighbour said that the family was apparently taken in for questioning following the murder.
We were told that the woman lived with her brother and his two sons.
The resident explained: “They are very nice and soft-hearted people. He [the suspect] is a person who won’t even shout at you, he is very shy and quiet.
“We could not believe it when we heard the news because they would always greet when they walked past.”
However, the neighbour said that the man had been “being like someone who is possessed”.
He added: “But he recently started being like someone who is possessed. The ouma only started living here when her husband passed away last year.
“The incident took place during the early hours of the morning so she did not even know that she was being attacked because you are in a deep sleep.
“This is a shock for us because this is such a peaceful community. There is apparently a picture of the woman’s face where you can see her face is [beaten], she was hit with a jack but I do not know how true that is.”
