Two 'innocents' killed at Portlands winkel

24-year-old woman and 'homeless man' gunned in apparent drive-by

A WOMAN and a man believed to be homeless were gunned down on Wednesday evening in Portlands, Mitchells Plain at a tuck shop.

The incident took place in Golden Gate Way where the 24-year-old woman and the 40-year-old man were gunned down. The female was transported to a medical facility for treatment where she later passed away and the man was declared dead on the scene.

The uncle of the woman, who doesn't want to be named, said that the 40-year-old man was said to be homeless.

He did not want to disclose the name of his deceased niece out of respect for the family.

The resident explained: “I arrived on the scene after the shooting and spoke to the detective who said that they were buying from the tuck shop.

"According to rumours the 40-year-old man is homeless. My niece was not involved in any gangsterism, so both of them are innocent. This incident has left the family and community is traumatised.

"We speculate that the reason for the shooting is gang-related because the modus operandi of these gangs are these drive-by shootings.

"Golden Gate Way is a problem area with gang activity and drugs. Most of the time when innocent people are hurt or killed, it is a case of mistaken identity and killed by association.”

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the motive forms part of a continued investigation and the suspects are yet to be arrested.

Van Wyk reported: “Mitchells Plain police registered two counts of murder following a shooting incident on Thursday, 21 August at about 18:53 at Golden Gate Portlands, Mitchells Plain, where an unidentified male in his 40’s was shot and fatally wounded and a 24 year old female injured.

"The injured victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment, where she later died due to injuries sustained.

"According to reports SAPS members on duty attended to a complaint of shooting at the mentioned address and on arrival they found an unidentified male laying with multiple gunshot wounds to the head. He was declared deceased by the ambulance personnel. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”
