Four learners from Parkdene Primary School in Kraaifontein were injured after a speeding vehicle slammed into them and fled the scene.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon around 2pm as the learners were crossing the road after school dismissed.

Head of Communications for the Western Cape Education Department, Bronagh Hammond, said two of the learners who are in Grade 3 and 7 went home with minor injuries.

However, a Grade 2 learner has been hospitalised with serious injuries, while another Grade 2 learner was discharged from hospital yesterday.

Hammond explained: “The WCED can confirm that four learners were injured following an alleged hit and run incident outside the school.

"According to initial reports, the car was speeding when it hit the four learners while they were crossing the road. The car then sped away and crashed into a traffic light. Three people allegedly jumped out of the car and ran away."

"Emergency services were called immediately. The school thanks the support of Titanium Emergency Services for their quick response time and support at the scene, as well as SAPS for their support. Two of the learners were transported to hospital."

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said Kraaifontein police registered a reckless and negligent driving case following an accident on 19 August at about 14:45 in Botfontein Street.

“The circumstances surrounding this accident are under investigation. The driver of the vehicle ran away. Investigations continues, no arrest as yet.”
