A MANENBERG woman was shot during a drive-by shooting on Women’s Day while on her way home from the butcher.
Davidene Witbooi, 40, was shot while on her way home from the butchery when she was gunned down in a hail of bullets.
According to Daily Voice sources, Witbooi was a witness in her brother Clinton Lewis’ murder case. He was allegedly shot in front of his family members, including Witbooi.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie reports: “Manenberg SAPS registered a murder case for investigation after a 40-year-old woman was shot and fatally wounded during a drive-by shooting this morning, Saturday, 9 August 2025 at about 11.15am in 5th Street, Heideveld.
“The circumstances and motive form part of the continued investigation. The suspects are yet to be identified and apprehended.”
Manenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) Chairperson Vanessa Adrianse told the Daily Voice that the shooting happened as they hosted an event called #Silencetheguns in Manenberg with policing agencies and shareholders held at Phoenix Secondary School.
Adrianse says: “On Women's Day while we are launching this event a female was shot about two kilometres from the venue. I and some other CPF members then took off to the murder scene.
“When we got there, we found the female living in the community of Manenberg.
"She was walking home, some men unknown to the community then shot and killed her.”
She added that it is devastating and the community is hartseer and kwaad as the incident occurred on Women’s Day.
The incident has been condemned by the CPF and police officials who have also been in contact with Witbooi’s family.
Adriaanse said the shooting was believed to be a targeted hit: “According to her family, she was a witness in a gang-related case. That might be the reason she was shot and killed.”
She added: “According to the CPF it is unknown whether the female has come forward to be placed in a safe home. Her family never appealed to us that this woman is unsafe.
“[Witbooi] never came to us or SAPS to appeal for assistance, so we do not think that the family expected this to happen.”
The CPF has further appealed to all females and the communities to be vigilant and said to stand up for each other, and to say enough is enough and these acts cannot be condoned.
