THE community of Mflueni was terrorised by gun violence on Tuesday as two separate shooting incidents occurred within an hour at two different locations.
Mfuleni Community Policing Forum (CPF) Chairperson France Mashaba told the Daily Voice that the incidents are linked to extortion gangs.
Mashaba says: “The incident is extortion related, the gangsters are fighting each other. We called all business owners to the police station to inform them of what was happening.”
“These people also hire small children to go and fight for them and collect the money.”
He said that even if the owners pay, they are trapped in a viciouos cycle, while warning that the youth are being corrupted.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg gave details on both incidents and said that cops will investigate.
He said: “The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Tuesday night, 5 August, at about 9.45pm, in Shire Street, Hillbrow, Mfuleni, where an unknown man was shot and fatally wounded and two other 23 and 31 shot and wounded are under investigation.
“Mfuleni police responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies.”
He added that an unnamed victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel while the other victims were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
The community was rocked by another shooting incident that occurred an hour later in Tsikazi Street around 10.43pm where the bodies of a ou and vrou in their twenties were found.
