THE South African Police Service (SAPS) in Ravensmead are fighting back against crime by doing their best to rid the community of illegal firearms.

They had some luck with Operation Shanela II on Sunday night, when officers confiscated a firearm from a teenager roaming the streets.

“In their quest to provide a safer environment for the communities in the Western Cape, members attached to Operation Shanela II arrested a 19 year old suspect for the possession of an unlicensed firearm on Sunday, 2025-07-27 at 19.15pm,” a statement released by Captain FC van Wyk read.

“This comes in the wake of several shootings incidents reported in Ravensmead policing precinct.

“The members were busy with stop and search operations when they noticed a suspicious looking male walking along Connaught Road.

“When the man saw the patrol vehicle approaching, he changed direction which resulted in the police members giving chase. The members apprehended the suspect and confiscated CZ pistol which was found in his possession. He was detained on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“Once charged, the suspect will appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charge.

“Western Cape police management applauded the team for their vigilance which led to the removal of a firearm which threaten the safety of the public.”
