GUN violence continued to erupt in Mitchells Plain after four people were shot dead on Sunday night and another one killed on Monday morning.
Multiple gunshots were reported across Mitchells Plain on Sunday night including Eastridge, Woodlands and Lentegeur despite efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS), community policing forums (CPF), residents and government to restore calm.
On Sunday at around 7.22pm, a woman was shot in the head in Pasteurhof, Woodlands and was declared dead at the scene.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said that Lentegeur police registered a murder case for investigation with the motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related.
Van Wyk reported: “On arrival [police] found the body of a female lying on her back at the mentioned address, with a gunshot wound to the head. She was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.
“The motive is believed to be gang-related. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”
Moments later, three more people were shot resulting in two being killed in Lobelia Street in Lentegeur around 9.10pm.
Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said that police found the bodies of a man and woman who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies and a third victim sustained gunshot wounds but was transported to hospital for medical attention.
Swartbooi added: “The victims were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. Another male who also sustained injuries was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.b
“The suspects fled the scene and they are yet to be arrested.
“The motive for this attack forms part of the police investigation. Lentegeur police are investigating two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.”
Yesterday morning, shots continued to ring out in Lentegeur, where a man was shot and killed in Salvia Street around 9.15am.
Sergeant Wesley Twigg said that Lentegeur police registered a murder case for investigation after a adult male was fatally wounded.
He added: “Police members attended to the crime scene where they found the victim with multiple gunshot wound. According to reports unknown suspects entered the premises and opened fire on the victim.
“The victim was declared deceased on the scene... The motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”
Linda Jones, public relations officer for the Mitchells Plain CPF called on the wider community to come forward and speak out.
Jones pleaded: “We need to put our fear aside and think of our children’s future and think about how many lives have been robbed, because tomorrow they can kill your son or your daughter.
“The CPF’s cry is: ‘Let’s stand together and unite for one common purpose to stabilise and rid our communities of these violent acts’.”
