An alleged drunk driver caused mayhem in Hanover Park on Sunday afternoon after Law Enforcement officers crashed into a Wendy house trying to pull him over.
Pictures and videos of the dramatic arrest of the motorist in a white Mercedes-Benz went viral on chat groups with rumours rife that he was a gang gunman.
According to a source on the scene, the driver was dik gesuip and was being chased after he put the lives of children in danger by driving recklessly through the Cape Flats community.
The source, who asked not to be named, says the man was driving along Stonelands Road and was ordered several times to stop, but he refused.
“The Law Enforcement officers were patrolling Hanover Park to curb shootings in the area when they saw this ou driving a white Mercedes-Benz recklessly through the streets.
“He had his wife and child in the car and was driving like mad in Stonelands Road.
“The officers ordered him to stop several times, but he just kept driving and they chased after him. People thought he was shooting, but he wasn’t, he was dik gesuip.”
The source says as officers pursued the man through the streets of Hanover Park, he drove into various side streets trying to dodge cops and nearly hit children.
“They cornered him near one of the courts and he just came to an abrupt stop.
“His wife and child jumped out of the car and ran to the back of the car, but as the Law Enforcement car was right behind him, they were forced to swerve and crashed into a Wendy house to avoid hitting the woman and her child.
“He jumped out of the Mercedes and tried to run away, but they caught him.
“One of the officers in the vehicle that crashed had injuries to his hand, but the Wendy house was empty and no residents were hurt.”
Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason confirms the arrest and says the 56-year-old man was arrested for reckless and negligent driving.
“The driver was ordered on numerous occasions to stop and just continued driving,” Dyason says.
“He eventually was stopped on the corner of Lonedown and Stonelands roads by officers and removed from his vehicle.
“He almost rammed numerous kids and other public members.
“One officer suffered a cracked bone on his pinky finger and some soft tissue damage during the incident.”
