UPSET: Veronica Speelman with the fake wyn
A Mitchells Plain mom was p!ssed when the vodka her daughter bought turned out to be water.
Veronica Speelman says she sent her daughter Stephanie to buy her favourite dop, Count Pushkin Pineapple Vodka, at Pick n Pay Liquor at Promenade Mall on Thursday.
Stephanie, who has a birthday coming up this Saturday, says she sommer bought two extra bottles to stock up for her party, and paid a total of R370.
On Friday, Veronica smaaked ’n dop and poured herself a glass of vodka but was left bitterly disappointed when she tasted only tap water.
“I was upset,” she says, “really upset, I wanted to have my drink because I will be at work next week during the time of the party.”
As liquor stores are closed on weekends as per lockdown regulations, she had to wait until Monday to send her daughter back with the afgewaterde dop.
Stephanie was also furious and said her birthday party would have been a moerse flop if she served her guests water.
“I never thought that a top retail store would sell us water branded as vodka. The store made me a fool, if my mother did not open that bottle, my birthday would have been a joke,” she said.
She returned the bottle on Monday and it was replaced by the store, but she now wants to warn other customers to watch out for the fake wyn.
“I asked them to take my details and escalate the matter to management because this is unacceptable,” says Stephanie.
In a statement, Pick ’n Pay confirmed the incident but said it’s not their fault.
It said they have sent the bottle back to the supplier for further investigation.
“All liquor sold to customers is sealed and purchased from verified and established suppliers.
“The customer revisited the store earlier today and we replaced the bottle as a gesture of goodwill.
“We have sent the returned bottle back to our supplier to look into this further.”
